Mean Maps — visual identity and web design concept for a geodata studio
Project introduction
Mean Maps is a fictional geodata and GIS studio specializing in the creation of precise maps, spatial analyses, and visually clean data outputs. The goal of the project was to design a modern, technology-driven visual identity that combines elements of topographic contour lines, a minimalist color palette, and a strong emphasis on readability. The project was further developed into a complete branding system, web design, and a set of realistic application examples.
Goal and brief
The objective was to create a complete visual identity that:
-
feels professional, technical, and clearly structured,
-
is based on a clean, high-contrast style,
-
draws from cartographic and topographic structures,
-
scales well for both digital and physical applications,
-
reflects the company’s focus on geodata, mapping, and location intelligence.
The solution included the creation of a logo, brand guidelines, a set of mockups, a landing page design, and an overall brand presentation.
Design concept
The main inspiration came from the aesthetics of contour lines, the precision of geodetic data, and the visual clarity of modern mapping applications.
Key elements of the identity:
-
Topographic lines as a symbol of precision and data depth.
-
Minimalism to emphasize readability and clarity of information.
-
High-contrast color palette (very dark blue + white).
-
Accent color in a subtle range (e.g. faded spring green, azure blue, …).
-
Technical typography referencing map legends and the GIS environment.
The result is a visual identity that feels technical, elegant, and trustworthy.
Logo & visual style
The logo is based on a combination of precise lines and minimalist composition.
The symbol combines a map “pin” with the letters MM (Mean Maps) and an expressive stylization of the word “mean” (in the sense of cool / badass).
The variability of the logotype allows for:
-
both positive and negative versions,
-
full-color and single-color applications.
Contour lines became a key recurring element across the entire brand.
Applications of the logo and visual identity
Web design (website mockup)
The website design emphasizes minimalism, technical clarity, and clear structure.
A contrasting combination of dark blue and white is used, complemented by subtle topographic textures.
Mobile application (mobile app)
The mobile app design includes:
-
a clean map interface with topographic lines,
-
a minimalist UI built on technical typography.
The mockup demonstrates how the identity behaves in a responsive, touch-based environment.
Brand assets & corporate print materials
As part of the identity, I also designed a set of corporate materials that reinforce the brand’s overall visual professionalism.
-
business cards with a topographic background and clean layout,
-
letterhead with subtle line work,
-
document design (datasheets, reports, corporate documentation),
-
a unified visual style across all printed materials.
As a result, Mean Maps presents itself as a fully realized geodata company with a complete and coherent brand.
